Ron Martin, who lives in North Carolina, is a husband, father, pharmacist, singer, songwriter, and musician. He is a busy, dedicated, multi-talented person. He is also a sarcoma patient. In February 2003 he was diagnosed with dedifferentiated liposarcoma of the spermatic cord. Eighteen months later, after his initial treatment, he had a recurrence at the primary site and began external beam radiotherapy at Wake Forest University Medical Center. In early June, he was working on a CD project. He wrote Bev and I a note introducing himself and said that he would like to donate a part of the sale of each of the CDs to sarcoma research. He said that he had visited the Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative website and was impressed by our work and wanted to contribute to it in some way. Since receiving that letter, we have come to know, through many e-mail exchanges, a very kind, caring and generous person—generous with his time and talent. His musician friends go back over 30 years. Ron has been into music since hearing and seeing The Beatles in 1964 when he was in the eighth grade. He was heavily influenced by them, The Byrds, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and the California Country Sounds. Along with several friends they formed a band and played at school functions and birthday parties. The early “band mates” stayed in touch and were together again in a band in the 80’s and another band in the 90’s. Some of the bands he has performed in include The Kaleidoscope, The Wampus Cats and Shiloh. Several of them joined up with him to make the CD: Wm. Michael Gallimore, Michael O' Turner, Dr. T. Earl Coleman, Dr. Scott Madry and Glen Joyce. The CD has just been released on the Flyin’ Cloud Records label. Ron and his wife, Suzon, selected The Circle as the title of the CD and the Native American symbol, The Life Path Circle, for the CD cover. They wrote the following about this symbol, which has its origins in Southern Arizona and Northern Mexico, the path "has no shortcuts, no dead ends and the entire path must be followed to complete the journey of life."
The CD is a collection of "soft folk rock" songs, which are listed on the buttons to the left. We think you’ll recognize a number of them. We also have obtained permission to post the lyrics to each of the eleven songs. You can read the lyrics for a song by clicking on its button on the left. Audio clips of the following four songs will automatically play when you read their lyrics:
The audio clips are large (between 1.5 to 2 Mbytes in size) and may take from 15-55 seconds to load, depending on your connection speed. The CD is being produced and released by Flyin' Cloud Records. You can purchase a copy of The Circle on the Flyin’ Clouds Records website by clicking here.
