Journal Reviews

ASCO Publications

Each issue of ESUN will give an overview of a journal or magazine that has articles dealing with sarcoma.  From time to time you might read an article in one of these publications that you would like to bring to the attention of your medical team and have them explain its relevance to your own situation. This month we discuss three publications of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO): The Journal of Clinical Oncology, the ASCO News, and the PLWC Bulletin.

The Journal of Clinical Oncology is the primary forum of scientific discourse for ASCO. It is a peer-reviewed, scholarly journal. The goal of the Journal, which is published monthly, is to publish the highest quality material dedicated to clinical research, both in print and in electronic media format. Among the various regular sections of the Journal are Original Reports, Review Articles, Editorials, Comments and Controversies, Special Articles, Diagnosis in Oncology, The Art of Oncology: When the Tumor Is Not the Target, Correspondence, and other work that relate to the care of patients with cancer.  The Journal’s website has an advanced search engine and non-ASCO members may purchase and download specific articles of interest.

The second ASCO publication is the quarterly ASCO News, which began publication in January 2002 in its current, expanded form. ASCO News is a society news and membership magazine. Back issues of the ASCO News can be downloaded, free of charge, beginning with the January 2002 issue from the ASCO website.

The third ASCO publication stems from ASCO’s People Living with Cancer (PLWC) website and is called the PLWC Bulletin. The PLWC website provides oncologist-approved information on more than 50 different types of cancer and their treatments, clinical trials, coping, and side effects. Additional resources include: a "Find an Oncologist" database, live chats, message boards, a drug database, and links to patient support organizations. The site is designed to help people with cancer make informed health-care decisions. The PLWC Bulletin is a biweekly e-newsletter that highlights upcoming events, new content on the website, and newsworthy topics for people in the cancer community, patients, families and friends. You can sign up to receive it on the PLWC website.
