Journal Reviews

AACR Publications

by Bruce Shriver

Each issue of ESUN will give an overview of a journal or magazine that has articles dealing with sarcoma.  From time to time you might read an article in one of these publications that you would like to bring to the attention of your medical team and have them explain its relevance to your own situation. This month we discuss five publications of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), Cancer Research, Clinical Cancer Research, Molecular Cancer Therapeutics, Molecular Cancer Research, and Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention as well as on online resource, Cancer Research Highlights

AACR is a scientific society of over 21,000 laboratory and clinical cancer researchers. AACR publishes five journals, holds an annual meeting attended by more than 13,000 scientists from around the world, organizes several highly focused scientific conferences each year on new and significant developments in research, offers educational workshops and grants to young investigators, maintains an active public education program, and interacts frequently with cancer survivors, lay advocates, and the general public in support of its mission. The five AACR journals are:

Cancer Research

Cancer Research is “the most frequently cited cancer journal in the world, with over 90,000 citations per year. This places it 13th among the more than 5,400 scientific journals in all fields, and in company with journals that have a broader focus, such as Science and Nature.”  Subspecialties covered in Cancer Research include biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics, biology (including cytogenetics, cell kinetics, cell culture, and radiobiology), biophysics, chemical carcinogenesis and mutagenesis, endocrinology, experimental pathology, immunology, preclinical therapeutics, virology, biomarkers, clinical pharmacology and chemotherapy, epidemiology, hematology, host-tumor relationships, immunotherpy, and radiation oncology.

Clinical Cancer Research

Clinical Cancer Research features “original articles describing clinical research on the cellular and molecular characterization, prevention, diagnosis, and therapy of human cancer. Its focus is on innovative clinical and translational research that spans from the bench to the clinic.  The editors are especially interested in clinical trials evaluating new treatments for cancer; research on molecular abnormalities that predict incidence, response to therapy, and outcome; and laboratory studies of new drugs and biological agents that will lead to clinical trials in patients.”

Molecular Cancer Therapeutics

Molecular Cancer Therapeutics features “basic research that has implications for cancer therapeutics in the following areas: experimental cancer therapeutics, identification of molecular targets, targets for chemoprevention, new models, molecular and cellular pharmacology, cancer chemistry and drug discovery, molecular classification of tumors, and bioinformatics and computational molecular biology.”

Molecular Cancer Research

Molecular Cancer Research features “basic research that has implications for cancer therapeutics in the following areas: angiogenesis, metastasis, and the cellular microenvironment; cancer genes and genomics; cell cycle, cell death, and senescence; DNA damage and cellular stress responses; model organisms; and signaling and regulation.”

Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention

Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention features “articles on the causes and prevention of cancer in humans. The journal draws on the work of epidemiologists, laboratory scientists, and medical and behavioral researchers. Epidemiologic studies on the distribution and determinants of cancer, including genetic susceptibility, host factors, infectious agents, chemical and physical carcinogens, and behavioral factors such as diet, tobacco use, and sun exposure are covered. Additionally, the journal presents investigations on the use of biomarkers to study the neoplastic and preneoplastic processes in humans. It also publishes research on chemoprevention and related clinical trials, as well as studies on the role of behavioral factors in prevention.”

The AACR website has a search facility to search all of its online content.

AACR also publishes, online, Cancer Research Highlights, which features summaries of up to six articles selected by the Editor-in-Chief. The summaries discuss why the study was done, what was found, and why it is important.  Available Cancer Research Highlights at the time of this writing are:
