Two Distinguished Physicians Join ESUN's Medical Editorial Board

by

Bruce Shriver, PhD

Editor-in-Chief, ESUN

We are pleased to announce that two distinguished physicians have joined our Medical Editorial Advisory Board. We look forward to the contributions they will make to ESUN.

Luca Sangiorgi, M.D. Ph.D.

Luca Sangiorgi is the head of the Clinical Genetics Unit of the Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute (IOR) in Bologna, Italy. He is also contract professor of Medical Genetics for the Medical Faculty and of Bioinformatics for the Faculty of Science, Mathematics and Physics of the University of Bologna.

Dr Sangiorgi received a Medical Degree at the University of Bologna. After completing his residency, he received his board in oncology from the University of Bologna and he received his Ph.D. in Clinical Genetics at Rome University. Dr Sangiorgi is coordinator of the IOR Rare Disease Center and responsible for three National Registers of Rare Disease (including Li-Fraumeni syndrome). He is also Member of the National Coordination of the Hub and Spoke Network of Clinical Genetics. He currently serves as Expert Reviewer for the European Union Commission for the Framework Projects 6 (FP6) and Framework Projects 7 grants.

Dr Sangiorgi's research interests are on clinical and molecular genetics  and correlation between genotype and phenotype in bone sarcomas and musculoskeletal disorders. He is also interested in bioinformatics applications that correlate genomic alteration and occurrence of diseases. He is a contributor of more than 40 articles published in peer reviewed journals such as Journal of Clinical Oncology Human Mutation and International Journal of Cancer. Dr Sangiorgi is an active Member of several international medical associations. He is a member of the executive committee of CTOS, serving as Treasurer. He is also a member of the European Musculo Skeletal Oncology Society (EMSOS), the American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG), and the Italian Society of Human Genetics. He is the Coordinator of the Regional Lab for Bioinformatics (GeBBA-Lab) and is also member of HL7 interest group for bioinformatics.

Ernest “Chappie” Conrad, M.D.

Dr. Conrad is Professor and Co-Vice Chair of Orthopaedic Services at the University of Washington Medical Center, Director of the UW Sarcoma Service and the Chief of Pediatric Orthopedics at Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center and Director of the Pediatric Bone Tumor Clinic. He is also the Medical Director of the Northwest Tissue Center.  Dr. Conrad received his medical degree from the University of Virginia after graduating from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. He completed his orthopaedic training at the Hospital for Special Surgery and served as a fellow in orthopaedic oncology for Dr. William Enneking at the University of Florida, and also as a fellow in pediatric orthopaedics for Dr. Mercer Rang at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Ontario.

Dr. Conrad founded the Sarcoma Service at the University of Washington and at Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center.  Both of these services are multidisciplinary and include comprehensive services to sarcoma patients, with a particular interest in defining chemotherapeutic risks for patients with high-grade tumors. His surgical interests include extremity limb salvage, pelvic resections for malignancies, and surgery for soft-tissue sarcomas.  His work with allograft transplantation and implant design has resulted in many advances in limb-sparing procedures.

Dr. Conrad’s research interests include the use of metabolic imaging (as in positron emission tomography, or PET, scans) for high-grade sarcomas, the assessment of chemotherapy response and the description of sarcoma outcomes.  Under Dr. Conrad’s leadership, the sarcoma service at the University of Washington has developed a comprehensive sarcoma registry to track patient outcomes.  The Orthopaedic Oncology program has trained Orthopaedic Oncology Fellows for 15 years with the vast majority practicing in academic programs in the United States.  Dr. Conrad has authored a recent textbook reviewing the treatment of musculoskeletal tumors.  He also founded the Northwest Sarcoma Foundation for sarcoma patients in the Northwest. Dr. Conrad is an active member of: American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Association of Tissue Banks, Children's Oncology Group, Connective Tissue Oncology Society, International Society of Limb Salvage, and the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society of North America.
