Leiomyosarcoma
Leiomyosarcoma is an
aggressive soft tissue sarcoma derived from smooth muscle cells typically of
uterine, gastrointestinal or soft tissue origin. Sarcomas are malignant
tumors arising from mesenchymal cell lines. They comprise a heterogeneous
group of cancers, each with unique clinical, histologic, and radiographic
characteristics. Soft tissue sarcomas account for 0.7% of malignancies.
Sarcomas are generally classified according to the normal cell line that
they most closely resemble. Of all soft tissue sarcomas, approximately 5-10%
are leiomyosarcomas.
We have two articles dealing with
leiomyosarcoma on our website: (1) "Leiomyosarcoma of Bone and Soft Tissue: A
Review"
by Michael J.
Weaver, MD and John A. Abraham,
MD, and (2) "Leiomyosarcoma of the Uterus: A Review" by
Sue Ghosh, M.D., Jonathan L. Hecht,
M.D., Ph.D., Tanaz
R. Ferzandi, M.D., M.A., and Christopher S. Awtrey,
M.D. We encourage you to consult both of these articles for more information

Where
else can you learn about LMS
Steve Dunn's
CancerGuide provides a very useful starting point for
undertaking investigations into cancer and cancer-related
issues on the Internet. Among other things, he discusses how
to research the medical literature and how to use and access
medical databases and online resources. He explains the
medical research cycle, where to get medical references and
describes the various types of papers in the medical
literature, and how to find and use a medical library.
A word of caution: while the
Internet is a wonderful tool to gain access to information,
simply because information appears on the Internet does not
necessarily indicate that it is accurate or truthful. Any
heath information that you obtain on the internet should be
reviewed with your physician.
